As per Forrester stated 2021 will mostly be a year the emerging technology of Edge Computing would be witnessing a shift from being a mere experiment to a practical and applicable technology mainly driven by 5G connectivity along with the support of AI.

There are 2 major factors around which new business models will be pushing their edge computing. These factors are

i., Cloud platforms facing competition from AI and

ii., Widespread proliferation of the 5G technology making it more practical.

The Predictions are as follow:

1.Edge hosting’s evolution into the full-fledged marketplace:

Various content delivery networks such as Fastly, Akami are starting to now target edge computing demands which has been leading them to reach out to companies so as to find out smaller widely distributed data centres where the application can be hosted much easier to the population that they srve.

2.Domination by Kubernetes but an absence of an orchestrated winner:

As per current statistics in hand it has been estimated that Kubernetes will be having roughly over 20 % of edge orchestration by 2021. The other key players who will be prevalent in the market are Huawei, Canonical, Rancher, Open Stacks and other similar competitors who happen to be on the verge to expand their existing operations of lightweight, edge optimized platforms. This means Kubernetes will be facing tough competition in the coming years.

3.AI’s departure from the data centre for edge computing:

The recent studies make in evidence that we can anticipate a big shift in 2021 with respect to usage of AI. Many organisations are shifting towards machine learning language models that are currently being trained in the fields of the data centre. This can be credited mainly to the introduction of new chips developed by Intel and Nvidia and also owning to uprise of machine learning techniques such as reinforcement techniques and federate learning.

4.The spread of private 5G network:

Private organizations are always on the rise to compete and establish their marketing dominance over 5G network some of the major players are going to be Ericson, Huawei, and Nokia.

5.Declined investments in the public cloud whilst an increment in investments for Edge computing:

Statistical reports forecast a step decline of growth in the public cloud sector from the very high of 42 % in 2018 to a low of 24 % by 2022. This also indicates a growth in Edge computing sector.
