October 21, 2013; Reliance Retail which operates over 1,500 stores across 136 cities in India is planning to enter into the e-commerce space in the next six to eight months. The retail chain which operates different formats like digital stores, apparel stores, hypermarkets and jewellery stores according to different reports is working on this project and is looking to challenge players like Amazon and ebay.
India’s e-commerce market which is worth USD 10 billion is expected to touch USD 200 billion by 2020 and online retailing market is expected to touch USD 70 billion by 2020. Reliance Retail whose PBDT stood at Rs.165 crore is the first quarter of 2014 is expecting a major chunk of this pie in the future.
The Indian e-commerce market has been dominated by players like flipkart.com, snapdeal.com, jaobong.com and yebhi.com apart from Amazona and eBay. It would be a very interesting battle if Reliance Retail decides to take a plunge into the Indian e-commerce market.
