June 25, 2014: Former Apple CEO John Sculley promoted mobile handset manufacturer, Obi Mobiles is planning to bring in Firefox phones from Mozilla in their brand name to Indian market. The company is in talks with Firefox regarding this. Singapore based firm is expected to invest $20 million initially to set up the operations including having its own design center and sales and marketing network in India.
Obi Mobiles’ CEO in India Ajay Sharma told the media that they would be launching Firefox and Android devices in India in around 6 months. There is also plan to launch Windows phones. As per the sources, these models would be targeted at premium segment, with a price tag more than the rivals. It seems the company is planning to play the experience game as Apple.
It may be recalled that Mozilla announced their mobile OS last year, but we are yet to see wide commercial deployment of handsets on Firefox OS. The interest shown by Obi Mobiles to launch Firefox phones in India may serve well to get it launched in a big way.
