This move of Amazon comes close on the heels of the move of rival Snapdeal which launched a mobile seller app last July. The app developed by SoftBank has currently 30 per cent of its 100,000 sellers using it actively. Introducing apps so as to introduce easy way of doing business has been the mantra of online retailers in the recent years. According to industry sources, Flipkart is also in final stages of launching its own seller mobile app.

More and more online retailers are launching apps for customers and sellers in the recent past as mobile business is fast becoming a key driver for growth in India. A recent study by Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) says that India’s Internet users totaled more than 300 million in December 2014. It further reveals that close to 60% of them are accessing the net from a mobile connection. Morgan Stanley report on Indian ecommerce also highlights this fact. The report says that “India is soon going to become one of the biggest markets in terms of new smartphone users as most first-time Internet users are jumping directly to mobile platforms.”

As the number of individuals using internet through mobile phones is on the rise, the online retailers are trying to cash in on this phenomenon.
