In the 2017 LA-based firm, Skin Motion created a new trend of sound wave tattoos that are making waves. It uses an application to change audio files to sound waves that you can get imprinted on to the skin and with the help of the application you can play it back. It can be your favorite music, the voice of a loved one, or anything that you care about. But now, Google is working on tattoos, to turn human skin into the touch-pad.

SkinMarks is an effort to make the next generation of wearable technology devices. The CNET reported demonstration videos and citing white papers. The project is partially-funded through Google Faculty Research Awards.

The sensor-driven tattoos are applied to the skin. The sensors can then be activated by traditional touch or swipe, like using Smart-phones. Some gestures are more specific to working on
the surface of the skin.

The tattoos that, when applied to the human body, will alter the skin into a living touchpad through embedded sensors. We could touch the area in the region of the tattoo or bend our fingers or limbs to start the sensors.

The researchers at Saarland University in Germany wrote in a white paper that the benefit of using skin as an interface is touching into the fine motor skills that human beings have naturally.

Interacting with our human skin and limbs also means we can able to do it without looking.

The tattoos are prepared by screen printing conductive ink onto tattoo paper. Some of the prototype tattoos include light-up displays and cartoon drawings.

“Through a vastly reduced tattoo thickness and improved stretch-ability, a ‘SkinMark’ is sufficiently thin and flexible to conform to irregular geometry, like protruding bones,” the
researchers wrote.
