Television Shows like Big Boss, Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), SaReGaMaPa, and Dance India Dance convey that remakes are not a new trend in the TV industry.

For so many years, broadcasters have either remade or dubbed regional shows into Tamil, Hindi, and vice versa. Therefore, it seems like the successful remake of these TV shows made the broadcasters to make many remakes of the hit shows. Some of the popular shows include Pavitra Rishta starred by the late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput which was the most popular zee TV daily soap remade in Tamil as Thirumathi Selvam and got hit.

Following the same trend, famous Hindi channel Star Plus has launched two shows Imli and Anupamaa which are the Hindi adaptations of its popular Bengali shows Ishti kutum and Sreeymoye which was telecasted in Star Jalsa.

This is not the first time that the broadcaster has remade a show in Hindi. Kulfi Kumar Bajewala which was launched in 2018 was a remake of Potol Kumar Gaanwala- a Bengali show. In 2014, the channel also remade a Bengali show Bou Kotha Kao as Gustakh Dil. Other Bengali adaptations include star plus show Sasural Genda Phool, Star Bharat show Jai Kanhiya Lal and Life Ok show Meri Maa. Now Life Ok is renamed as Star Bharat.

Shailesh Kapoor who is the founder & CEO of Ormax Media stated that the Bangla shows, in particular, are made into Hindi remakes, because there are more cultural similarities between Bangla and Hindi TV markets. The Hindi show Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala’s success made Star Plus to look at the StarJalsha shows more keenly in the last 2 years.

According to the  Broadcast Audience Research Council of India, the Star Plus show Anupamaa which was launched after the lockdown on July 13, 2020, is said to be the current top-rated show in the Hindi GEC Urban.

Kapoor added that the advertisers of the channel are not concerned whether the fiction show is an original or a remake. They will pay for the ratings and will back the shows that are rating high, irrespective of whether the shows are originals or remakes.
