Wipro announced on Thursday that it would pay $117 million in cash to acquire Ampion, an Australian provider of cyber protection, DevOps, and efficiency engineering services. The deal is scheduled to close in the second quarter of this year, to strengthen Wipro’s presence in Australia and New Zealand.
Wipro expects the combined offerings with Ampion, which include engineering transformation, DevOps, and security consulting services, to provide scale and business agility in response to its customers’ rising demands.
“Ampion has a strong track record and enjoys a tremendous reputation with leading businesses in the country, a collaborative work culture, and considerable local subject matter expertise,” said NS Bala, CEO, Wipro APMEA. We see Ampion as a valuable partner who can help us extend our footprint and accelerate our growth in the Asia Pacific region.”
The news comes on the heels of Wipro’s $1.45 billion purchase of Capco, a British consulting company.
“Following Covid-19, IDC expects IT spending on security to ramp up in the coming years, and technologies like Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), Zero Trust, and Security Orchestration & Automation (SOAR) have become a necessity,” Sharath Srinivasamurthy, research director for IDC India’s enterprise solutions & ICT practices, said. Enterprises, on the other hand, have recognized the value of being agile and creative to achieve a competitive advantage, and demand for engineering services and DevOps capabilities have increased. Wipro’s acquisition of Ampion demonstrates the company’s commitment to the APMEA region and Australia as a whole, while also bolstering its position in high-demand, high-growth areas like defense, DevOps, and engineering services.”
Ampion, a Melbourne-based consultancy, and technology company with offices in Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane, was established in 2018. It employs over 500 consultants and technology specialists. As of June 30, 2020, the company had revenue of $85.5 million, with about 12% of it coming from product sales.
Ampion was created by the merger of Revolution IT and Shelde, two IT service providers. Revolution IT was an Australian IT services company founded in 2004 and Shelde was an Australian digital IT security company founded in 2010.
During this deal, Wipro will acquire 100% of the company’s stock. “The synergies of Ampion and Wipro’s integrated portfolio of transformation products would greatly support our customers, staff, and the entire industry ecosystem,” said Jamie Duffield, CEO of Ampion.
