The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will launch a new e filing portal on June 7 to make tax filing easy. The website will help the immediate delivery of services and enable quick refund of taxpayers. Due to the new website launch (www.incometax.gov.in launch), there will be no services from June 1 to June 6. Hence, it is advisable to complete any urgent tasks involving submission or uploads of documents before June 1 2021 to avoid any complication further. The IT department will not set any compliance date during the blackout period. The hearing of cases or compliances will start from June 10 onwards only as it will give sufficient time for the taxpayers to complete their procedure through the new system. The hearings or compliances which were scheduled during the blackout period will be preponed or postponed and work items will be rescheduled after the launch of the new website.

The first e-filing procedures were introduced by CBDT in the year 2017 to minimize face-to-face interaction between Assessing Officers and taxpayers. At present, the income tax authorities including Assessing Officers interact with the taxpayers through the E-proceedings section of the E-filing portal or by NFAC / NeAC within the Faceless Assessment Scheme. The CBDT in August 2020 directed that all assessments should be faceless and has to be approved by National e-Assessment Centre.

The new e-filing portal is designed in such a way that it reduces the work and coordination between income tax authorities and taxpayers as uploads completed or procedures need to be done will be displayed in a single dashboard enabling easy follow-up action on both sides. The new e-filing portal is enabled with free software available both online and offline with interactive questions to help even a layman to do tax filing without subject knowledge, with automatic filling by the software thereby reducing data entry work. The new e-filing portal also has a new call center that helps the users quickly respond to queries with FAQs, e- learns, chatbots, or virtual help desk services.

The CBDT also launches a mobile app for the portal which will provide the taxpayers all functions similar to the desktop version. Also, the new portal will gradually add up different payment options such as online banking, credit card payment, NEFT/RTGS transactions which help the taxpayers to pay tax using any bank account.
