L’Oréal announces the actualization of the first cosmetic bottle made from plastic completely recycled using Carbios’ enzymatic technology and plans to put into production the bottles based on this wild innovation in 2025. Biotherm would be the first brand of the Group to launch a product in this bottle of the future.

The technology formulated by Carbios, a pioneer in the development of biotech solutions for the recycling of Polyethylene terephthalate(PET) plastics, facilitates the manufacture of new products made from 100 per cent recycled items produced using its enzymatic process. It has the edge of being suitable for all types of PET such as clear, opaque, coloured and multilayer and making these plastics immensely recyclable.

To promote the revolution of innovative plastics recycling ideas and work together to industrialize the technology, L’Oréal set up a consortium with Carbios in 2017, which PepsiCo, Nestlé Waters and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe have since joined.

L’Oréal invested in Carbios in 2019 through its venture capital fund BOLD (Business Opportunities for L’Oréal Development).

With L’Oréal’s new sustainability program for 2030, “L’Oréal for the Future”, the Group has taken a step towards the fundamental change of its business and has set new objectives, particularly in the area of packaging:

  • 100% of its plastic packaging will be refillable, recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025;
  • 100% of its plastic packaging will be procured from recycled products or bio-sourced, and the Group will no longer use any virgin plastics of fossil origin by 2030;
  • By 2030, 100% of the ingredients used in its formulas and all bio-sourced materials will be identifiable and come from sustainable sources.

L’Oréal is working with a number of strategic partners, giving it access to the best technologies, to achieve these objectives.

L’Oréal is also collaborating with Albéa, the international leader in beauty packaging, with whom the Group developed the first cosmetic tube including FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified carton in 2019, Purecycle, for the production of solvolysis-recycled PP (polypropylene), and LanzaTech and Totalwith whom, L’Oréal announced a world first in October 2020: the production of a PE (polyethylene) cosmetic bottle made from recycled industrial carbon emissions.
