Educational institutions have a vital role in bringing up a person into a responsible citizen. In the ongoing global pandemic, COVID-19, students of all age groups, across the globe are getting used to a new way of education called online classes or virtual classes.

All the schools and colleges would open once the pandemic comes down. But then, parents will not be confident enough to send their children to school. Therefore, as a solution to the concern, Mamta Aggarwal Rajnayak, Senior Manager, Applied Intelligence India at Accenture and Samarth Rajnayak, Vice President at Barclays Global Service, proposed a machine learning-based intelligent smart school administration system using computer vision and IoT.  The system can do both assist in monitoring as well as prevents crime within the school premises.

As the COVID-19 situation improves, schools and colleges would reopen. Yet, parents would be highly concerned about the hygiene, safety, and health measure of the children. And it is not practical for the school to monitor each and every student. Thus, the Smart School Administration (SSAS), an AI framework supported by IoT, computer vision, and machine learning tools, helps in student hygiene, safety, and security at school premises. SSAS connects administrators through all the possible devices such as cameras, machines, networks, etc to get the data. They then collected data is fed into ML algorithms to gain insights and trigger the required alert, before the occurrence of any bad situation. Data are stored in physical storage such as Cloud or fog and data manipulation devices like Databricks, Spectrum, Hadoop, Teradata, etc.

The SSAS uses concepts used in IoT devices, like internet-connected to school cameras, home automation systems, and wristbands that share locations.

Rajnayak said that the company is planning to add tracking devices such as RFID tag on ID cards to track the real-time location of both students and staffs, and visitors within the school premises and connect the system with COVID prevention apps like Arogya Setu which helps in identifying student or staffs or visitors at risk.

The system is planned to be installed at the entrance of school gates, which helps in identifying people who are not wearing masks, measure temperature, etc, to ensure the hygiene, safety, and health of students, and staff.
