Xilinx has recently announced that its programmable AI chips are being used in Subaru’s EyeSight automotive car security system. Subaru Levorg, a mid-size car premiering soon in Japan, is facilitated with an AI chip that will provide advanced features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, and pre-collision braking.

The name of the device is the Xilinx Automotive-qualified Zynq UltraScale+, which is a multi-processor system-on-a-chip (MPSoC). In short, it has been uniquely named Zynq. Zynq is a programmable chip that helps power EyeSight, the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in the car. Such systems use sensors to act immediately if it senses any abnormal activity by the driver. In case, the driver does something unsafe or falls asleep, this advanced system will take over.

Zynq uses 16-nanometer manufacturing advanced technologies to give high performance, ultra-low latency, and functional safety capacities that the EyeSight system requires to appropriately detect and respond to vibrant driving conditions. The system performs activities like AI signal processing and graphic processing for cameras with a broader field of view than in traditional cars.

Xilinx has been manufacturing automotive chips for almost 20 years by now. More than 190 million cars have been exported globally for industrial use, with 75 million employed for protection in more than 200 car businesses. But chips like the Zynq are a lot smarter, and they are paving the way to produce further advanced self-driving cars.

Automotive designers use these types of chips because they can be designed to manage various hardware functions at the very last minute. Cars take quite a long time to build, but the car manufacturers need to stop using the outdated technologies, said Xilinx automotive lead Willard Tu, in a recent interview. So, Xilinx provides the ultimate qualitative and featured improvements in the form of the final software and hardware just before the car is ready for launch. This Technological advance will further help to reduce accidents and any vital mishappenings.

The Zynq chip is another level of advanced automotive chips, and Xilinx is now working on a new generation, the Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform, which uses a 7-nanometer production. These chips will also be used in the cars sometime soon.

The latest Subaru includes additional safety technologies, such as Active Lane Switch Assist, where the car gradually switches out of the lane to navigate around the road and can easily switch between lanes to follow a vehicle. This also has auto-deceleration which is focused on how quickly will a driver moves around a bend, and provides drive warnings for road jams as well.
