In 17 countries over South Asia and Africa, Airtel is a global communications solution provider with over 480 million customers. Its network covers over two billion people. It’s ranked among the top three mobile operators.

Airtel is headquartered in India and is the vast integrated communication solution provider.

Bharti Airtel organized the O-RAN Alliance Global PlugFest 2021’ in India in cooperation with global and Indian technology companies. It was held at the Airtel network experience center near Delhi, Manesar.

This years’ fest had vast participation of the global O-RAN community members. It was the second time Airtel hosted the fest in India. Airtel was joined by Cisco, Keysight Technologies, Mavenir, AMI, ASOCS, IP Infusion, Capgemini Engineering, Intel, Sercomm, STL, TCS, VIAVI Solutions, VMware, and VVDN.

The global PlugFest provides a platform to the global O-RAN community to integrate and test solutions, which include 5G and 4G.

Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer of Bharti Airtel, stated that they were thrilled to initiate the O-RAN ALLIANCE in India and join the technology companies together who have the same vision of constructing an intelligent, open, and cloud-based RAN ecosystem.

He also mentioned that the event gave a dynamic response that highlights the growing maturity of O-RAN and a global view towards this movement.

The learnings will speed up the journey to ‘Make in India’ O-RAN-based 5G solutions that can be established widely across India, and around the world, he added.

Since the beginning of the O-RAN Alliance, Airtel has been a board member. Currently, it associates a global community of nearly 300 telecom operators, vendors, and research and academic institutions operating to develop a sustainable open RAN ecosystem.

Airtel was known to be the first operator in India to arrange a virtual RAN solution formulated on the disaggregated and open architecture described by the O-RAN ALLIANCE.

Through supporting several innovative and disruptive partners, it is committed to opening RAN solutions further. This helps them to develop solutions that are capable to address the scale and complexity of the network and other operators around the world.

Earlier, Airtel has declared a strategic partnership with Intel, Qualcomm, and Tata group/TCS for constructing a ‘Make in India’ 5G solution based on O-RAN.
