Viacom18 targets advertisers for IPL on the back of Jio

Viacom18, which is backed by Mukesh Ambani, has won the digital rights to the IPL, which would enable the network and its telecom affiliate Jio generate advertising money. The IPL rights will let the corporation to expand its reach in the telecom industry.  

“Advertisers will have a unique opportunity to access a larger, younger, more relevant, and highly engaged audience. Viacom18’s strategic alliance with Jio would provide unrivalled targeting capabilities” according to a statement released by the firm on Tuesday.

Cricket and the IPL represent the best of sport and the best of India, which is why we are ecstatic to be continuing our collaboration with this incredible game and competition. “Our goal, as with all we do, is to bring the thrill of the IPL to cricket fans everywhere – in India and around the world” Nita Ambani, Director of Reliance Industries Ltd, stated.  

Viacom18 has secured the rights to digitally webcast Indian Premier League events across the Indian subcontinent for the seasons 2023-2027. It has acquired the digital rights to a one-of-a-kind package of 18 games each season in India. Viacom18 has secured broadcast and digital rights in three out of five overseas regions, including some of the world’s most important cricketing nations.  

To promote itself as a digital media, entertainment, and sports destination, Viacom18 outbid rival broadcasters and internet platforms.  

It added in a statement to the media that Viacom18’s digital platforms are preparing for leadership in India and with the Indian diaspora globally, thanks to their broad reach, strategic partnerships, and growing content portfolio. 

“With these Indian Premier League (IPL) rights, Viacom18 will be able to take India’s most popular sporting event to every part of the country. It will bring IPL to every Indian in every area of the country, including the 60 million FreeDish homes that are currently unable to watch this beloved sport.”  

Viacom18’s first significant venture into cricket comes after securing a raft of sporting rights in soccer (FIFA World Cup, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue1), badminton, tennis, and basketball (NBA).
