To improve road safety in India, the Central Government of India has suggested the Bharat NCAP car assessment programme. Under this programme, automobiles in India will be given ‘Star Ratings’ depending on their performance in crash tests. This will be done to improve overall road safety in India. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari provided information on this latest development on his Twitter account. “I have now authorized the Draft GSR Notification to implement Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), wherein autos in India shall be assigned Star Ratings based on their performance in Crash Tests,” Gadkari wrote in a letter. The New Car Assessment Program is abbreviated as Bharat NCAP. According to the minister, Bharat NCAP will be a critical tool in changing the automobile industry into Aarmanirbhar and establishing India as the key vehicle hub in the global market.

Nitin Gadkari has claimed that the Bharat NCAP testing process will be linked with worldwide crash-test methods while considering the rules already in place in India. Original equipment manufacturers will be able to have their vehicles examined at India’s in-house testing facilities as a result of this. It will be a voluntary initiative, and the appropriate vehicle manufacturer or importer will bear the cost of a new car for the evaluation. However, participation in the programme is optional.

Bharat NCAP will lobby automakers to increase the safety features in newly manufactured automobiles. The proposed review will assign Star Ratings ranging from 1 to 5. The Bharat new car evaluation programme, often known as Bharat NCAP, will go into effect on April 1, 2023. The Global New Automobile Evaluation Programme (Global NCAP) is a forum for collaboration among new car assessment programmes worldwide. It promotes the global acceptance of the most crucial motor vehicle safety standards issued by the United Nations.
