Diageo India has created impact at scale promoting best water stewardship practices across different parts of the country. Leading by example, they have charted a holistic approach to achieve Diageo’s ‘Society 2030: Spirit of Progress’ goals in India aiming to protect the environment. The organization’s grain-to-glass sustainability efforts is divided into three areas namely Preserve Water for Life, accelerate to a Low Carbon World and Become Sustainable by Design.
Diageo India has paved the way for championing water stewardship and empowering communities through impactful community initiatives. Water Replenishment:
Diageo India has established a water replenishment capacity of 4,79,047 Cu.M annually under its community WASH program, directly contributing to local infrastructure improvements and enhancing the quality of life for people in the communities it serves. Additionally, the organization has initiated projects to create an extra 2,75,000 Cu.M of water replenishment capacity across water-stressed sites.
These efforts are complemented by reducing water use in operations and replenishing over 37,000 cubic meters of water, thus extending clean water access to over 200 households.
AWS Certification: Diageo India’s Alwar distillery in Rajasthan recently achieved the prestigious Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Certification, becoming the first spirit distillery in Asia to do so. The AWS  companycommitment to sustainable water use, enhancing access to clean water, and encouraging collective actions to improve water availability and groundwater recharge.
Through this certification, Diageo India demonstrates a dedication to maintaining a sustainable water balance, ensuring good water quality, and promoting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices.
Mangrove Replenishment Project: Diageo India aims to replenish the mangrove plantations in Odisha and restore the delicate natural balance, reduce the carbon footprint, empower local communities, and create a lasting impact. The initiative is in line with the organization’s belief of Living Good while Doing Good for the planet.
Wash Project Hardoi: The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project, launched in collaboration with CSRBOX Foundation in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, has significantly improved access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities for over 12,000 individuals across eight villages, underlining Diageo commitment to community health and hygiene.
Regenerative Agriculture:
Diageo India runs the Regenerative Agriculture Programme in partnership with The Nature
Conservancy India. Under the programme, the company aims to equip over 5000 small-holder farmers in Punjab and Haryana with regenerative agricultural practices, thereby enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and water quality for a resilient food system. Through such initiatives, the company has overachieved their water replenishment target by 25% three years ahead of the originally set timeline of 2026, showcasing an exceptional commitment to sustainability and efficient resource management.
Trees Outside Forest in RajasthaTOFR): Diageo India is contributing to the revival of ecosystems through its collaboration with Gramodaya Samajika Sansthan (GSS) collaborates to accelerate the ‘Trees Outside Forest in Rajasthan’ (TOFR) programme in Alwar. Supporting the TOFR programme, Diageo India will plant 2 lakh trees to create mini-forests in Alwar, Rajasthan. The initiative is complemented by construction of check dams to promote environmental and social benefits like addressing the issue of reduced water shortage during dry months.
