Kraven’s origin story is intricately tied to his connection with the environment. Raised by a father, Nikolai Kravinoff (portrayed by the inimitable Russell Crowe), who values strength above all else, Sergei grows into a hunter who views nature not as something to exploit but as something to protect. His environmentalism stems from a trust in natural balance, making Kraven part of a growing roster of anti-heroes who care for the planet in their own, often violent, ways. Poison Ivy represents this in DC lore, as does Killmonger (Black Panther), who used Wakanda’s power to challenge oppression. We can’t forget Avatar: The Way of Water, which champions the balance between ambition and nature.
With environmental justice driving Kraven, he’s a relatable protector. His methods, however, are bloody and brutal.
