Adani Ports berths the deepest container vessel to call on India

The 17m draft 190,000 MT MSC Washington LNG docked at Mundra Port

Vizag, 16 February 2023:  Mundra Port, India’s largest private commercial port owned by Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), has set a record in Indian shipping for berthing the deepest container vessel ever to call on an Indian port. On Sunday, 12 February 2023, the M/V MSC Washington LNG, with a draught of 17.0 metres and displacement of 190,000 MT, anchored safely at Mundra Port, the flagship port of the Adani Group.

MSC Washington LNG, among the world’s most massive container vessels, is a dual-fuel ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) with a carrying capacity of 14,428 TEUs. The vessel is equipped with an LNG fuel gas supply system (FGSS) by C-LNG Solutions. The marine team at Mundra Port facilitated and ensured accurate predictions of the under-keel clearance required to safely berth the gigantic vessel by factoring in all the complex conditions of the vessel and live weather conditions.

Presently only Mundra Port has the infrastructure and depth to facilitate such deep draft container vessels. The safe and smooth berthing of one of the world’s deepest container vessels at Mundra Port will remain one of the most distinguished milestones in the port’s repertoire.

Mundra Port has 26 berths and two Single-Point Mooring (SPM) facilities with an annual handling capacity of 248.82 MMT of cargo along with dedicated terminals for various types of cargo and commodities. Mundra is also the only port in India that can take Capesize vessels with a draft of 18.1 meters for the power plants. At the SPMs, the port can also take VLCCs of draft 22.5 meters. In 2022, APL Raffles – a Temasek-class container ship with a capacity of 17,292 TEUs and also the largest container vessel ever to call on an Indian port – docked safely at Mundra Port.

With the capacity and the capability to handle ever-increasing cargo volumes with sophisticated precision and conforming to the highest industry standards, APSEZ’s Mundra Port is well on its way to becoming one of the top ports in the world.
