Two private universities offer degree and diploma courses in partnership with ed-tech companies. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) issued show-cause notices to both universities, stating that outsourcing is a complete breach of norms.

The action by the technical education regulator takes place after it. The universities and colleges were alerted against providing courses in distance learning and online mode in collaboration with Ed-Tech companies declaring that no franchise agreement is permitted according to the norms.

Anil Sahasrabudhe, AICTE Chairman, shared with PTI that they identified two universities whose advertisements were visible, and they have issued a show-cause notice to both universities.

They asked the companies for an explanation on what kind of outsourcing they have with these companies and also reply on why the acceptance should not have retreated.

He added that they requested the public as well as stakeholders to notify them if they run into a similar arrangement between universities and ed-tech companies.

Until now they have spotted two of them but if they run into more universities, they will issue show cause notice and take actions accordingly.

The Chairman of AICTE earlier explained that the government is not against Ed-Tech companies, but they are not permitted to inquire into areas that are not their domain.

He also stated that the top institutions in the country, such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) were not permitted to provide postgraduate management but only postgraduate diploma in management until the time an Act in Parliament was passed.

But the post-graduate programs in management and computer applications were advertised and marketed by these ed-tech companies, which can only be provided by universities and approved colleges. Thus he asked how they could permit ed-tech companies to do so.

He mentioned that the universities and colleges, which are approved to provide degree and diploma programs, are expected to offer them on their own and not pass on private companies or outsource their job to any third party.

The UGC and AICTE have guided the parents and students to examine the recognition status of any program on their website before applying in any course.
