Jan 4, 2013: Al Jazeera, one of the strongest channels operating in Pan – Arab countries, promoted by Government of Qatar has acquired Current News Network co-founded by Mr. Al Gore, Former Vice President of United States of America. Current TV was founded in 2005 and has been doing really well with the channel all set to post revenues of USD 114 million in 2013. With this acquisition, Al Jazeera will reach nearly 40 million households in US. Al-Jazeera has plans to rename the channel as Al Jazeera America and have half of the content as US News. Soon after Al Gore confirmed the deal, Al-Jazeera could see a drop in the reach of the viewership as Time Warner Cable Inc. the second largest TV operator in US dropped Current News Network from its bouquet. This is going to be a major challenge in the future and it remains to be seen how Al-Jazeera is going to bounce back.
