Amazon India is offering help to the vendors sourcing packaging supplies in order to standardize packaging for the purchases happening across the platform. It is the first time that the e-commerce company has taken this initiative globally.

Right now, orders that are fulfilled by the e-commerce giant and sent from its warehouse have the packaging branded by Amazon. But, more than a quarter of the sellers on the Amazon platform make use of their own packaging.

As a part of this new initiative, the sellers will be able to purchase Amazon branded packaging materials including thermocol balls, corrugated boxes, and air filled packs on the portal.

Gopal Pillar, the director of seller services at Amazon India, stated that they have been piloting this project for a while. He stated that they have realized that the same assures consistency, improves the shopping experience, and facilitates easy exchange and delivery. In fact, a quality experience will result in repetitive business for the sellers letting them grow their business sustainably.

For the past years, the packaging used for the shipments have become pretty stronger and better to protect the overall range of small to high-end offerings that the companies should delivery. Still, the online vendors face high return rates due to spoiled merchandise that is due to the inadequate packaging. This can be reduced by using standardized materials. Almost 20,000 sellers are expected to purchase packaging material online and Amazon will witness an increase in revenues, stated Sreedhar Prasad, Partner – E-commerce at KPMG.

Industry experts state that this concept will could be extended to other verticals as well. For vendors, this will mean a lesser cost and lesser rejection rate or wastage per packaging. On the other hand, for the marketplace, it will result in additional revenue.

The vendors are not complaining with this new move. Some wish that the other e-commerce companies follow the new strategy of Amazon.
