Amazon’s Alexa marks 3 years in India

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant completes three years in India, and according to the firm, more consumers purchased an Echo system in non-metro areas, making for more than 50 percent of the country’s users in 2020. India’s experiences with Alexa rose 67 percent last year. Further clients asked Alexa to run a smart home gadget 8.6 lakh times every day.

 Sharing some insights from the Indian markets, ‘Gana sunao’ or ‘play a song’ was Alexa’s highest request at 17 lakh per day, there were some quirky ones from India’s audience as well. For one, consumers said, “I love you” to Alexa 19,000 times a day in 2020, which is up 1200 percent from 2019. There were already 6000 requests for Alexa ‘Will you marry me’ every day. Around 9000 times a day, consumers send in requests for a ‘joke’. There were 19,000 requests a day asking Alexa to ‘Kahani sunao’ or say a story, while there were 43,000 requests a day to make an animal sound.

Last year, there was also a substantial increase in Alexa interactions, especially for guided meditation, music for exercises, games and learning skills, and material such as mythology, devotional music, stories, and Shayari. There is no denying that many relied on Alexa to assist with therapy, workouts, provided that more people were trapped at home due to the pandemic. Not only are the  Alexa clients limited to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, but also locations like Spiti, Bundi, and Gadchiroli. Amazon announced that consumers bought Echo smart speakers from over 85% of pin codes in 2020.

The year 2020 also saw Amazon’s Alexa being used as a built-in feature on different smartphones, close to how Google Assistant is now present. By speaking the wake word, helps users to trigger Alexa, even though the phone is closed. This is currently offered by brands such as Xiaomi and OnePlus on phones like Redmi Note 9 Pro and OnePlus Nord. Amazon is planning to add additional skills to the voice-assistant soon. These include the Macmillan ability to help learn English, news in 12 regional languages, and access through the Rekhta skill to the world’s largest set of Shayari in Urdu. More audio entertainment narrated by actors and famous storytellers will soon be added to Audible Suno.

Amazon also launched a deal to encourage new buyers to pick up Alexa driven speakers to celebrate its third anniversary. Customers will have discounts on Echo Products, as well as enticing, smart home packs, and more for 24 hours beginning on February 15.
