The Indian Agricultural sector provides almost 50% of the employment opportunities in India and a majority of this is disguised unemployment ie an excess amount of labor force is used for a work that can be achieved by a number much lower amount.

With a 13% contribution to the GDP of the economy, the agricultural sector is largely unorganized and underdeveloped. This underutilization has will lead to excessive strain made in the agricultural sector as we have a young and growing population. The development of Smart Cities has been given onus by the current government and the need to have a planned development is necessary given the woeful state of India’s current megacities. The answer to both these problems is one, Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

With the use of Artificial Intelligence farming can be much more organized. By segregating the soil based on the texture and fertility, AI can be used to analyze all the information that is being provided and give useful and relevant data like which crop is more suitable to be grown where and during what season. Is there a chance for crop failure, how much fertilizer must be used etc? This way of using Artificial Intelligence for agriculture can help the Indian agricultural sector to become more organized and help farmers to get better crops. AI can also be used to give information regarding the amount of produce that is there and how much is being transferred to the market. This allows farmers to send their product to markets that have a greater demand for the product and fetch a more competitive price. This will also prevent Illegal hoarding to artificially inflate prices.

Artificial Intelligence in Smart Cities

The use of Artificial Intelligence in Smart City development is expansive. Imagine a city that is governed by Artificial Intelligence, traffic blocks can be reduced as AI can direct traffic through other areas, crime can be reduced as police will be informed promptly without any delay by AI, Sewage blocks can be detected, etc. Using a self-learning AI that is connected to the city will help it to function smoothly.

Artificial Intelligence Courses and Development

There is the recent news that Nvidia and IIT Hyderabad are joining hands to open a technology centre that focuses on accelerating the Artificial Intelligence development in India. This will be used to develop the uses of AI in agriculture and smart city development along with language Understanding. This is also aimed into develop the country’s first AI-based Btech course hence advancing the AI development in the country.
