The Bengaluru-based startup has begun manufacturing in a 123000 sq ft facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu from the beginning of the year 2021. Ather has already begun delivery of its electric scooters in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad, deliveries are progressing in a phase’s manner in 21 cities for the first quarter. There are further plans in place to expand operations to 40 more cities by the end of 2021. Over the next 5 years, the company will invest a total of Rs 635 crore for the expansion. The recently opened facility in Hosur required an investment of Rs 130 crore. Currently, there are two offerings from the manufacturer bot electric namely 450 plus and 450X priced at Rs 1.39 lakh and Rs 1.59 lakh respectively. The company manufactures the product using 90% localization and make the battery pack by themselves.
The Hosur facility has an annual capacity of 110000 electric scooters and 120000 battery packs. Ather confirmed its services across 27 cities in 15 states namely Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Calicut, Ahmedabad, Mysore, Kochi, Hubli, Jaipur, Indore, Panaji, Bhubaneshwar, Surat, Chandigarh, Vijayawada, Nasik, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Nagpur, Noida, Lucknow, and Siliguri.
To meet the labor requirements the company will train more than 4000 employees during the next 5 years. The new facility in Hosur is build using industry 4.0 principles. The officials at Ather also focus on making the factory ‘smart’ by the use of smart algorithms to analyze the collected data and gain valuable insights. Ather Energy has filed 13 patents on the breakthroughs made in the manufacture of batteries. The electric scooter by Ather called the Ather 450X currently uses a 2.9 kWh battery that offers high energy density and discharges which allows a customer to charge quickly as well as extract high performance.
