April 6, 2013: After getting the nod in principle from the Government of India, Bajaj Auto which is the world’s largest three wheeler maker is all ready to launch the first quadricycle in India, RE60. If the quadricyle is launched then Bajaj would be creating an entirely new category of vehicles in India. Bajaj is in talks with Renault-Nissan for this project.

Since a long time auto makers like Mahindra and Mahindra, Eicher, Piaggio and Bajaj Auto have been working on this project as quadricycle is considered one step ahead than the traditional autorickshaw. Quadricycle is considered to be cheaper than a car and is an unconventional form of transport.

Though Bajaj has not revealed about the marketing plans but in a statement from Rajiv Bajaj, CEO & MD, Bajaj Auto in the initial years they would be looking at SAARC countries and also Africa and Latin American countries. In Europe and US quadricycle is quite popular and mostly used as a recreational buggy.

Bajaj which would be looking for support from Renault-Nissan in marketing these quadricycles in Europe would be manufacturing the vehicles starting this financial from its Aurangabad plant. The company has got a capacity of manufacturing 60,000 units per annum. RE60 which would be a van like vehicle will have different fuel options and conforms to European quadricycle standards.
