Bangalore, 08 December 2023: The Shell.ai Hackathon for Sustainable and Affordable Energy concluded its 2023 edition with unparalleled success, bringing together 5,762 participants from around the globe. This year’s hackathon focused on a complex challenge that was met with exceptional enthusiasm and ingenuity.
The event marked a historic moment as top finalists from various corners of the world gathered at the Changemakers of Tomorrow stage at the Shell Technology Centre in Bangalore to demonstrate their prowess in digital solutions and Artificial Intelligence. The finalists pitched their solutions live, engaging with Shell.ai leaders and celebrating their achievements together with the Shell.ai Hackathon team.
The innovative solutions presented reflected diverse visions, creative problem-solving approaches, and a genuine passion for addressing complex issues in the energy sector. Team Perception from Bangalore emerged victorious in the general edition, claiming the prize of USD 2,200.
Team Perception commented on their solution, “We managed to solve a complex problem with an easy solution by leveraging open-source data and cutting-edge technology. Our starting point was an analysis of various open-source data sets, including those from the government of India and the state of Gujarat. We integrated this data into our model to predict biomass forecasts, coupled with a highly optimized and customizable clustering algorithm developed from scratch. For us, the solution is not just about data and algorithms but creating a tangible impact.”
All participating teams focused on a common challenge: designing a sustainable and efficient agricultural waste collection network by predicting waste generation potential in a given geography, utilizing cutting-edge remote sensing data on local vegetation. The winners of the University Edition will further explore the opportunity of an R&D project with Shell.
The Shell.ai Hackathon continues to be a beacon of innovation, fostering collaboration among brilliant minds committed to building a lower-carbon world where energy is accessible and affordable for all. You can find out more at shell.com/hackathon
