BatX Energies Inaugurates Lithium Ion Battery Recycling and Material Extraction Facility in Uttar Pradesh to Meet Surging EV Demand

Gurugram, December 30, 2024 – BatX Energies Pvt. Ltd., India’s fastest-growing lithium-ion battery recycling company, has inaugurated its state-of-the-art Critical Minerals Extraction plant (HUB-1) in Uttar Pradesh. This milestone marks a significant leap in extracting vital materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from used lithium-ion batteries, directly addressing the challenges of resource scarcity. These critical minerals are essential for supporting India’s rapidly expanding EV sector and reducing the nation’s dependence on imports, reinforcing the vision of a Net Zero 2070  and AtmaNirbhar Bharat.

Building on the success of its first Black Mass production facility in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, launched at the end of 2022, the newly established plant represents a significant milestone, scaling operations to a commercial level after a successful 21-month industrial pilot, established in mid-2023. This transformative step in the downstream battery recycling value chain harnesses BatX’s proprietary chemical process to extract high-purity critical materials, ideally suited for specialty applications and the lithium-ion cell manufacturing industry. The advanced hydrometallurgical plant, which is designed and fabricated in-house, is optimized to efficiently recycle all types of lithium-ion battery waste, including manufacturing rejects from future gigafactories. This groundbreaking facility highlights BatX’s unwavering commitment to circularity and sustainability, supporting both its own mission and that of its OEM partners while driving the transition toward a cleaner and greener world.

As the global adoption of EVs accelerates, sourcing critical materials outside China presents a significant challenge due to high costs and complex processes, making sustainable material availability increasingly elusive. BatX Energies’ new facility rises to this challenge with a vertically integrated approach that combines material extraction expertise with the development of second-life energy storage applications, enabling a seamless solution for batteries at any stage of their lifecycle.

Operating with zero-emission, zero-waste processes, the facility achieves exceptionally low energy consumption while meeting stringent ESG targets. This pioneering approach not only makes critical materials for EV batteries more affordable and accessible but also aligns effortlessly with the Ministry of Environment & Forest’s Battery Waste Management Rules 2022. By prioritizing both environmental responsibility and operational efficiency, BatX Energies is redefining sustainable recycling practices and setting new benchmarks for India’s evolving EV ecosystem.

Speaking at the inauguration, Utkarsh Singh, Co-founder and CEO,  BatX Energies, stated: “Electric vehicles are at the forefront of the clean energy revolution, and BatX Energies is proud to lead this transition. The Hub-1 facility reflects our dedication to sustainable extractive metallurgy, creating a circular economy by recycling used batteries and reintegrating critical materials. India’s reliance on exporting black mass underscores the need for facilities like this. By collaborating with domestic R2 recyclers and battery producers, we aim to convert black mass into valuable metals at low cost, making battery recycling sustainable and economically viable for every stakeholder in the supply chain, and positioning India as a global hub for critical mineral refining by 2040.”

“This plant is the result of rigorous four years of R&D and the hard work of our passionate team. We are grateful to our investors, stakeholders, and the Government of India, including initiatives like Startup India, MSME, and the PSA Office for EU-TTC initiative, as well as EXIM Bank of India, for their crucial support,” added Vikrant Singh, CTO and Co-founder of BatX Energies.

BatX Energies remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation and sustainability, continuously integrating data analytics and predictive modeling to optimize performance for energy materials. By reducing waste, fostering circularity, and delivering high-performing, cost-effective solutions for EV manufacturers worldwide, BatX is addressing the critical challenges of climate change and resource scarcity. With a firm belief that circularity is the only way forward, BatX is setting new benchmarks in sustainable practices, paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future.
