Mumbai:
The Debabrata Auro Foundation (DAF) conducted a profoundly impactful Intoxication Awareness Session followed by a Stationery Distribution in the Colaba Slum, Mumbai aimed at educating young students about the dangers of addiction while simultaneously supporting their academic growth by providing essential stationery. This initiative addressed two crucial areas, raising awareness about substance abuse and empowering students with the tools they need to focus on their education and make informed life choices.

Addiction involves compulsive seeking and taking of a substance. It’s essential to seek help as soon as one develops signs of addiction. To take timely action, there should be an awareness regarding the dangers of addiction.  Intoxication awareness sessions can help to understand the risks of drug and alcohol use and how to make decisions that minimise harm. Given this, The Debabrata Auro Foundation (DAF) took the initiative by hosting an insightful session for students in the Colaba slum.

“The session began with a comprehensive presentation that detailed the harmful impacts of addiction, touching on how substance abuse can affect physical health, academic performance, and overall well-being. The presentation emphasised the long-term consequences of addiction, such as deteriorating health and academic failure, often fueled by environmental factors like peer pressure and stress. Students learned to recognize the signs of addiction and were taught how to avoid these destructive behaviours. An interactive discussion followed, focusing on addiction prevention strategies and real-life scenarios involving peer pressure. The students were encouraged to share their thoughts on making healthy decisions when faced with difficult situations, with the session underscoring the importance of building strong support systems through family and friends,” said Dr Debraj Shome.

Dr Mitalee Shome added, “One key aspect was informing students about available local resources and treatment options for substance abuse, reinforcing that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. To further support the students; educational pursuits, DAF concluded the event with a stationery distribution drive. Each participant received a long book, symbolising the importance of education in their lives and providing practical assistance to help them succeed academically. This gesture highlighted DAF’s commitment to supporting education as a powerful tool against the challenges faced by underserved communities.”

Dr Rinky Kapoor said, “The students were encouraged to view their new stationery as a reminder to prioritise their studies, use education as a way to steer clear of harmful distractions, and stay focused on their goals. The event received positive feedback from both students and community members, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive environment. By educating young minds about the dangers of addiction and providing them with the resources to continue their education, DAF successfully fulfilled its mission of improving the well-being and education of underprivileged communities. The Intoxication Awareness Session and Stationery Distribution not only equipped the students with knowledge but also empowered them to make informed, positive decisions that will shape their futures for the better.”
