On Thursday, Sony BBC Earth launched ‘Earth Champions’ to bring into light the inspiring stories of real-life heroes, who with their ceaseless efforts and daily actions are making this planet a better place for us to live in. The season premiere for ‘Earth Champions’ was aired LIVE on Sony BBC Earth’s Instagram page (@sonybbcearth) on 22nd April, to celebrate Earth Day.
‘Earth Champions’ the digital property from Sony BBC Earth was promoted on-air and through social media platforms. The video for the 1-hour talk is uploaded on Sony BBC Earth’s official Facebook page. The pilot for ‘Earth Champions’ features Afroz Shah, the first guest for the series in conversation with the host and Earth lover Tara Sharma.
Afroz Shah, an environmental activist and lawyer from Mumbai, is the UN Environment Programme’s “Champions of the Earth” awardee. Afroz Shah is known for organizing and leading the clean-up of Mumbai’s Versova Beach, the ‘Biggest Beach Clean-Up in World History’.
Afroz Shah was recognized by Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. Inspired by Afroz Shah’s efforts, UN Environment Programme launched the ‘Clean Seas’ campaign globally. The young environmentalist has also led other major beach clean-up drives, including Dana Pani beach and the Mithi river in Mumbai.
In the conversation with Tara Sharma, Afroz shared his impelling journey about organizing the World’s ‘Biggest Beach Clean-Up’. He also talked about water pollution and the increasing need for cleaning oceans till they are made plastic and filth free.
This Earth Day, Sony BBC Earth inspires viewers to follow the footsteps of these real-life heroes and take individual steps towards a greener planet and more sustainable world.
Sony BBC Earth has also collaborated with Bollywood actress, Bhumi Pednekar for the ‘Young Earth Champions’ contest, an initiative that aims to recognize and reward inspirational ideas from young minds across India, who aspire of building a better and sustainable future, by emerging as climate warriors.
The channel, with its collection of landmark natural history shows like- Superhumans, Planet Earth, Wild Alaska, Secret Life of Dogs, Earth Day Special among many others- brings alive the Love for Earth and points out the importance of sustainability. The shows are conceptualized in line with the channel’s ideology “Feel Alive.”
Sony BBC Earth, through its latest IP ‘Earth Champions’ aims, to bring a positive change in individual actions towards environmental sustainability.
