GameStop declares Strategic Partnership with Microsoft to boost Retail Technology

GameStop is one of the world’s largest retailer of video games gives the best selection of new and pre-owned video gaming titles and accessories in both physical and digital formats. It is an American video game headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, United States. It has more than 5000 retail stores throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand as of February 1, 2020. 

The GameStop has entered a multi-year strategic partnership agreement with Microsoft Corporation. Also, in addition, to expanding its physical and digital video game offering as well as improving the company’s retail technology- sending its shares increasing by 44%, their highest one-day rise on record. Being partnership with Microsoft, with more than 5000 retail stores globally and its world-class e-commerce platform, GameStop increases its wide customer network, PowerUp Rewards, and Omni-channel capabilities to deliver enhanced gaming solutions to its customers.

The sale of video games has increased during the pandemic period and GameStop had fared particularly well.  The company had only a small fraction of the overall market with Apple and Best Buy dominating in January. By end of March, the GameStop online sales were leading both companies by a wide margin. There is a rapid rise in online sales of Game Stop which is more than 1500% between March 1 and April 10.

The partnership has the following commercial elements:                              

  • GameStop suggested using Dynamics 365 to standardize its back-end and in-store operations which include finance, sales, e-commerce, and retail. The personnel would be able to access both e-commerce and sales data. This contains details of the purchase, data on the availability of products, pricing, and promotions.
  • Moreover, the associated persons will be more trained with new Microsoft Surface devices that will allow associates to move freely thereby meeting the needs of customers efficiently within the store footprint. Microsoft Surface devices are an important part of modernization strategy in the digital world for the management of stores.
  • GameStop plans to develop more than 30,000 stores associates with Microsoft teams for improved productivity and collaboration tools. The staff will be more open to asking questions and share the experience with another, thus, helping them to provide a better customer experience.
