Gandhi Hospital performs splenectomy for Thalassemia children

Hyderabad, 8th May, 2023: On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, Thalassemia Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) today extended their appreciation towards Gandhi Hospital for their extensive support to thalassemia children at the society offering splenectomy medical services. The remarkable services has been provided by the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Gandhi Hospital, headed by Prof Dr K. Nagarjuna (Prof & HOD), Dr S. Srinivas, Dr. Kavimozhy ilakkiya, Dr A. Raj Kiran and Dr K.Phanindra.

The Department of Paediatric Surgery, Gandhi Hospital has done 40 safe splenectomies as on hospital records over a period of 3 years and Dr K. Nagarjuna, himself has done 70 splenectomy operations for thalassemia children. Thalassemia children require splenectomy due to increased demand of blood transfusion. These children are high-risk morbid patients with bleeding tendencies (coagulopathy) with an appearance of fascial bone abnormality, pale, icteric look, enlarged heart(cardiomyopathy), gross abdominal distension and not appealing for any surgeon to readily perform splenectomy. 

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chandrakant Agarwal, President(TSCS) and Dr. Suman Jain, CEO & Secretary (TSCS) said, “We are extremely grateful with the great quality of service provided by these diligent and enthusiastic paediatric surgeons at Gandhi Hospital. Our post-operative thalassemia children have a smooth sailing in the environment of high quality service with corporate ambience enriched with ‘Children play den’.
