Chennai | December 9th, 2024: Geri Care Hospital, India’s 1st exclusive multi-speciality hospital for Senior Citizens, today announced that it successfully accomplished Tamil Nadu’s first ever use of the Inari Mechanical Thrombectomy device- Inari FlowTriever®, on an 85-year-old elderly patient who presented with acute Pulmonary Embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition that requires prompt intervention to restore blood flow and prevent fatal complications. The traditional and standard procedure of Thrombolysis was declared unviable due to elevated bleeding risks.
In this critical scenario, mechanical thrombectomy emerged as the most suitable alternative given the need for rapid intervention. After careful deliberation, it was decided to use Veiva’s Inari FlowTriever® device, an advanced thrombectomy system designed specifically for large-vessel venous thrombosis that could effectively remove the clot without exposing the patient to additional bleeding complications. This case marked the first use of the Inari device in Tamil Nadu to date. The elderly patient has demonstrated remarkable recovery following the procedure, with resolution of symptoms and normalisation of oxygen levels. No procedural complications or bleeding events occurred, underscoring the safety and efficacy of the system.
The Veiva’s Inari FlowTriever® device was chosen for its unique advantage of mechanical engagement for rapid clot removal from the pulmonary arteries, over traditional thrombolytic therapy, which relies on clot-dissolving medications. Apart from being minimally invasive, the mechanical thrombectomy device is designed for optimal efficacy to deal with clots formed in the veins.
Dr. Lakshmipathy Ramesh, Founder & Managing Director of Geri Care Health Services Pvt Ltd said, “As part of our vision to offer multidisciplinary geriatric care for our elders through our exclusive geriatric hospitals, we continue to push the boundaries on bringing cutting-edge innovations and interventions that are safe and effective for our elderly patients, allowing them an enhanced quality of life in their golden years. I would like to congratulate our medical and support teams under the able leadership of Dr. Selvakumar on this case, which is a first of its kind in the state of Tamil Nadu. We are also immensely grateful for the trust and confidence that our elders and their families place on us!”
Dr. Selvakumar Chinakkanan, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Geri Care Hospitals said, “This particular case of Pulmonary Embolism was a challenging one given the risks associated with conventional procedures. Our decision to use of Veiva’s Inari FlowTriever® device highlights the transformative potential of mechanical thrombectomy in managing high-risk patients. We are excited to be part of this significant step forward in providing advanced, life-saving treatment options for patients with venous thromboembolism, with a first such procedure in all of Tamil Nadu.”
