Jan 1, 2013: It would be mandatory for food processing industry to put a ‘GM’ label on packaged foods if any genetically modified ingredient is used. A Gazette Notification has already been issued by Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food Public Distribution in this regard and this notification will come into effect from 1st January 2013. The ‘GM’ label has to be put at top of the principal display panel on the package. The new rule of including the ‘GM’ label is applicable for some 19 products including biscuits and breads. The new notification though has stirred up controversy it will definitely help the urban consumers in making informed choices as packaged foods containing GM content is present more in urban markets. Genetically Modified crops are cultivated more in countries like Brazil, Canada and U.S.
