June 30, 2014: Google recently announced the launch of a new design reference platform targeting low cost smartphones for emerging markets. This new initiative called Android One will enable the handset manufacturers to come out with low cost smartphones. Initially Google will be launching this programme in India and the internet major has already announced its initial tie up with companies like Micromax, Spice and Karbonn. The smartphones targeted  at lower income group customers will be priced at less than USD100. The Android powered smartphone as part of Android One initiative will have a screen slightly smaller than five inches and will have basic features including FM radio.

Though smartphones will be powered by Android, Google has allowed  phone makers to differentiate the handsets by adding a few of their custom apps. This can be done by handset makers without diluting the Android experience. Android One platform will allow the phonemakers to save time and launch new models quickly. The new low cost smartphones will get software updates from Google and a list of recommended apps will be made from ‘Play Auto-installs’. Work is on to provide affordable telecom service packages to go with smartphones as well.
