Ravi (name changed) a 50-year-old male patient suffering from end-stage liver disease caused by decompensated liver cirrhosis or Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), along with hypertension had been under the care of Dr. Sandeep Kumbar at HCG Suchirayu Hospital, for 14 months. Despite receiving extensive medical treatment, his condition continued to deteriorate, leading to the recommendation for a liver transplant as a life-saving measure.
Diagnosed with cirrhosis, Ravi registered for a transplant at HCG Suchirayu Hospital four to five months ago as a liver transplant is the only curative treatment, but he faced challenges due to the long waiting list. After exploring transplant options in neighboring states without success, he was preparing to shift his registration to Bangalore when, on August 15th, a call from Jeevasarthakathe (the tissue and organ transplant board) brought life-changing news. A 28-year-old cadaver donor had become available, and Ravi was next in line to receive the donor’s liver.
In response, Ravi was admitted on the 15th of August while Dr. Basant Mahadevappa and his team immediately flew to Hubli, initiating the transplant surgery at 3:00 AM. The 10-hour marathon surgery continued until the following day, concluding at 1:00 PM. The procedure was completed without complications, and the patient was transferred to the Transplant ICU for recovery and discharged on 9th September.
Speaking about the success of the procedure, Dr. Sandeep Kumbar, Primary Consultant Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist, HCG Suchirayu Hospital, Hubli said, “ This successful liver transplant highlights the remarkable growth and advancement of medical infrastructure at HCG Suchirayu Hospital, Hubli.
