Bengaluru, 30th September 2024: In the wake of recent incidents highlighting the tragic consequences of excessive work pressures faced by professionals, including Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) reaffirms its commitment to addressing the urgent need for work-life balance and stress management within the profession. The increasing demands placed on professionals across industries have raised widespread concerns regarding the detrimental effects of high-pressure environments on personal health and professional efficiency.

To tackle the rising concerns around work-life pressures, ICAI has formed a dedicated group headed by Mrs. Seema Gerotra, Additional Director on Work-Life Balance & Stress Management to introduce measures aimed at improving work-life balance and managing stress within the profession.

Addressing this pressing issue, CA. Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal, President, ICAI emphasizes the importance of employee well-being for multinational corporations and organizations. He stated, “Employees are the backbone of any organization, and their well-being is essential to its long-term success. We strongly urge Organisations to implement balanced work policies that promote employee health and reduce stress. By prioritizing the mental and physical well-being of their workforce, organizations can foster a more productive, resilient, and innovative environment.”

ICAI has long recognized the challenges of stressful work conditions and has proactively implemented various measures to support the well-being of its members and students. The Institute has organized numerous health and wellness programs, including health awareness camps, webinars on stress management, yoga sessions, motivational conferences, walkathons, marathons, all aimed at promoting mental and physical wellness. ICAI remains committed to the holistic well-being of Chartered Accountants, both professionally and personally. A Grievance Redressal Cell is already in place to address concerns from members, students, and employees, with efforts underway to enhance the system for more structured and empathetic resolutions.

In addition to the above, ICAI has introduced further initiatives to promote a healthy work environment for its members and employees.

  • Work-Life Balance Awareness Programs & Mental and Physical Wellness Campaigns: ICAI will continue to conduct regular workshops, webinars, and awareness campaigns promoting physical activity, mindfulness, and emotional well-being with a focus on managing professional commitments while maintaining a balanced personal life.
  • Comprehensive Stress Management Initiatives: ICAI, in collaboration with health institutions, will introduce stress management programs, including counselling services and mental health support for members and students.
  • Collaboration with Industry: ICAI will work with industry partners to promote flexible work models such as remote working, flexible hours, and wellness programs, helping members balance their professional and personal commitments.
  • Peer Support Networks: ICAI will develop peer support networks where members can share experiences, seek advice, and collaborate to address challenges related to stress management.
  • Special Counselling Helpline: ICAI plans to introduce a counselling help desk within its National Call Centre (9997599975) dedicated to assisting members with stress management and work-life balance concerns.
