India Inc records 40% hiring spike in May

Cities reported double-digit year-over-year hiring increase in May, indicating that demand for talent in metros and non-metros remained stable.


In May, India Inc. reported a 40% increase in hiring activity over the previous year, with the leisure and hospitality industry gaining traction on the back of the summer vacation season.

According to a research by job portal Naukri.com, the industry saw a more than four-fold increase in hiring in May compared to a year earlier, when travel was severely hampered by the coronavirus pandemic’s second wave.

“According to the latest Naukri JobSpeak May’22 Index, the increase in hiring activity continues, with +40 percent Y-O-Y growth in May’22,” the study added.


The Naukri JobSpeak is a monthly index that estimates and records hiring activity on a monthly and annual basis based on job listings on the Naukri.com website.


Last month, hiring in the travel and hospitality sector was strong, thanks to a surge in travel due to the summer holiday season. “After a big slump last year, the industry rebounded with a 352 percent year-over-year increase.

In comparison to April, the sector has maintained its monthly run rate, indicating that it is stable “According to the report, Retail (+175%), real estate (+141%), and insurance (+126%) were among the other industries that reported strong hiring activity.

Due to the large base effect, the IT-software/software services business saw a smaller increase in job listings, at +7%.

Delhi (63 percent) had the biggest Y-O-Y increase among metros, followed by Mumbai (+61 percent).
