The fifth edition of the India Today Conclave East kick-started on Monday, July 4. The first all-girl Assamese band, Hurricane Gals, performed during a session titled Opening Notes: Bihu Beats: Music, Melody, and the Mirza Girls.

Here is an all-girl local band that deserves the most praise and attention while we continue to be fixated on musicians from the West. The event got underway with a soulful performance by The Hurricane Gals. They also sang various Assamese songs while playing the dhol and guitar.

Hurricane Gals gave a speech at the Oberoi Grand in Kolkata during the fifth India Today Conclave East 2022.

How was the band formed?

The band’s lead vocalist, Mamoni Kalita, explained how the group came to be. “Arjun Begum, my bestie, plays drums. She is also an excellent drummer. We both thought that we should always always start a band which band had to be unique. We don’t see too many ladies playing. We simply wanted to get started and monitor the process. We formed our band Hurricane Gals on Friendship Day 2010,” she remarked.

What were the reactions of their family to their choice to pursue music?

My parents have wanted me to be something different since I was a child, but I informed my mother that I wanted to be a musician. I accustomed sing since my childhood and it had been my mother who taught me. As a child, whenever someone would depart any instrument reception i would play it the total night and this is often how i spotted I wanted to be a musician,” Mamoni added.

When asked, how the concept to infuse folk and rock germinated, this is often often what Mamoni said, “Folk songs have a soul. After we sing songs from our home, it looks as if there’s something special about it. India encompasses lots of oldster’s music. In Assam, there’s preferred music that you simply just can never get enough of. So we reasoned, why not take action on this directly. After we sang our first song, people liked it such lots and it had been such a hit that we decided that we’d sing this way of music, and thus, we fused popular music genre genre with it.”
