Indian Express bets; Nandagopal Rajan will lead new initiatives

The CEO of Indian Express Online Sanjay Sindhwani recently sent an email to the organization. According to sources in the organization who read the email, Sindhwani was noted about the achievements of the digital business in the last 9 quarters that he was a part of.

He also mentioned that the advertising-led business model is good enough to sustain, but “not good enough to push growth at scale” that will enable Indian Express Online to deliver quality journalism consistently.

He noted that the organization’s digital portfolios will now change towards subscriptions as a “key business strategy”. Last year, as the pandemic-induced lockdowns disrupted the supply chain and circulations of the daily broadsheets came to standstill, especially in the metros.

As the advertising revenues dropped down, newspapers started introducing paywalls. Indian Express decided to put all its ePapers behind paywalls and Sindhwani mentioned in his email that ePapers have attained success but that’s not enough. After that Sindhwani hinted that the organization will roll out new digital initiatives for paid subscribers to access.

According to Comscore Indian Express is ranked as one of the top three English websites for news in the country. But if the sources have to be believed, then the Executive Director of The Indian Express Group and Head of the New Media Anant Goenka, and the CEO Sanjay Sindhwani have much more”bigger, broader and deeper” plans. So they are investing heavily in product and editorial. With that in the backdrop, the media conglomerates are also ready to roll out with a set of new initiatives including audio and web offerings in their mind.

Sindhwani in his mail also has introduced Nandagopal Rajan the  Editor of Indian Express Online as the lead new initiative in subscriptions on Indian Express”. Nandagopal Rajan has also been the Technology Editor of the Indian Express newspaper. “Nandagopal Rajan has worn many hats in his career. He has also played as the product function he also has been a technology editor in Express and he understands content and the audiences like no one else in our organization,” wrote Sindhwani in the mail.
