India’s online video consumption doubles in last two years: comScore Report

May 13, 2013: India’s online video consumption which stood at 1.86 billion per month as on March 2011 has doubled to 3.71 billion videos per month in the last two years. This revelation has come out in a report by global digital research firm comScore. As per the Video Metrix reporting of comScore, the number of people viewing online videos has seen a quantum jump of 69 per cent in 2013 when compared to 2011.

The study shows that the total online audience in India which was 31.94 million in March 2011 stands at 54.02 million viewers in March 2013 and the total number of internet users in India stand at 137 million. comScore attributes the doubling of online video consumption in India to “sizable increase in the number of online video viewers, in addition to increasing consumption per viewer”

The mediums which were ranked as the top online video property as on March 2013 were You Tube with 31.5 million unique viewers followed by Facebook with 18.6 million views and Yahoo sites with 8.2 million views. This shows the clear dominance of You Tube as the most preferred online video watching medium. The other properties which found place in the top 5 mediums are Video ad platform VDOPIA with 6.4 million viewers and TubeMogul with 5.5 million viewers.

This growth in online viewing is good news for marketers as this represents significant opportunity for them to plan their video ad inventory. It is predicted that as the online video viewership increases in the coming years there will be tremendous opportunities for the key players in the market.
