New Delhi, July 8 (PTI) The assassination of two Indian politicians, including the former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, on Friday when he was giving a campaign address in western Japan has once again called attention to the death of other world leaders and heads of state.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed sympathy on Abe’s passing by saying, “Today, the entire India mourns with Japan and we stand in solidarity with our Japanese brothers and sisters in this sad period.” Abe and India had a particular relationship. He declared that on July 9, a day of national mourning will be commemorated as a sign of India’s utmost respect. Friday in Nara, Abe, 67, was fatally shot from behind minutes into his speech. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital for urgent care. He received emergency care, but was subsequently declared dead. At the scene of the attack, which horrified many people in Japan, police apprehended the alleged gunman.
The assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi by two of her security men left India in mourning in 1984. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, her son and a former prime minister, was assassinated as well. On the morning of October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi, who had gained the nickname “Iron Lady,” was murdered by her security guards after having just left her official residence at 1 Safdarjung Road in Delhi. The structure is now a memorial.
She was brought to AIIMS, but the first female prime minister of India passed away there. Her life had been an inspiration to women all across the world, and some parents had even given their children her name. Even many seasoned news anchors couldn’t help but feel emotionally overburdened on that tragic day since the country was so gripped by grief.
Reading the news of her murder, according to seasoned TV host Salma Sultan, may have been the most challenging task of her career, she said in an interview with PTI.
In the evening of May 21, 1991, a female suicide bomber during an electoral rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, assassinated Indira Gandhi’s son Rajiv Gandhi, who succeeded his mother as prime minister after her death and held the position until 1989. On that awful day, the nation was so overcome with grief that even many seasoned news broadcasters couldn’t help but feel emotionally overwrought.
Salma Sultan, a seasoned TV personality, stated in an interview with PTI that reading the news of her murder may have been the most difficult work of her career.
