18th, April 2023: The career-tech platform, Internshala, has adopted the menstrual leave policy as a part of its organisation’s work regulations allowing one day of leave every month and a total of ten leaves across the year for its female employees. The policy was rolled out on 1st April 2023 and is effective from the same date.
The policy has been adopted to build a more inclusive workplace for menstruating employees and will be applicable to all full-time employees and interns who are on the company’s direct payroll. Currently, the organisation has 51 percent full-time female employees and interns. The adoption of the menstrual leave policy will offer them balance in their work and personal lives while also ensuring business continuity.
The policy will help to determine clear guidelines and processes for managing leave, and reduce confusion and uncertainty among the employees and managers and make it easier for everyone to plan better without disrupting the workflow.
Additionally, the company has adopted the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act 2017 as a part of its work regulations to grant maternity leave where a woman employee can avail twenty-six weeks of paid leave extending up to a maximum of 8 weeks before the expected delivery date and allowing to avail remaining time post childbirth.
On rolling out the menstrual leave policy, the founder and CEO of Internshala, said, “Introducing menstrual leaves in Internshala’s leave policy is our attempt at building a more inclusive work environment at Internshala. More than 50% of our team at Internshala are women and through this leave policy, we acknowledge the difficulties they face during menstruation and hope that this will help them take care of their physical as well as psychological health.”
