From May 26, 2021, the Information technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital media Ethics Code) Rules came into effect which clarifies the requirement to furnish details of Chief compliance officers, grievance officers who actively monitor content, provide an immediate response to the grievance and take down any inappropriate action or contents.
Google, Whatsapp, Facebook, Linkedin, Telegram, Instagram had already come up with their details according to the compliance of IT rules. Twitter is still in the line to submit the required detail. In February only the government issued the guidelines and informed about the implementation of rules in the coming three months.
However, Government gave 15 days to all the digital platforms via a notice dated 26th May 2021. In Addition to this, the ministry of information and broadcasting instructed OTT platforms, digital news publishers, Broadcasters who telecast news and current affairs on media to present their details based on IT rules 2021.
Moving forward to the steps needed to be taken where the removal of Unlawful information, Strict action towards any kind of violation to Online safety and privacy of users, Mandatory grievance redressal Mechanism which will be open 24/7, and take necessary actions within 15 days. Intermediaries should have to follow due diligence Chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, a resident grievance officer needs to be appointed in India itself. They will make a monthly compliance report and submit it to the concerned ministry.
In the last few years, online harassment, bullying, fraud, data leaks bring the focus of the government to the sensitivity of the issue. After the Popularity of the internet among teens, it’s mandatory to keep platforms clean and useful rather than making them toxic for them. Small kids become so easy targets for fraudsters and hackers, this compliance helps parents to track their kid’s activity. There is no major change brought by the rules it only makes the platform more transparent. Anything beyond the law and constitution of India was never been justified.
