L’Oréal Paris has announced the launch of the Lights On Women Award on the occasion of the 74th Festival de Cannes that will honour one emerging female filmmaker in collaboration with the Short Films competition of the Cannes Festival 2021.
The winner will be picked from a selection of the Festival de Cannes’ Short Films contest and from global film schools’ short film campaigns. The ultimate choice will be found out and announced by L’Oréal Paris spokesperson and Academy award-winner Kate Winslet, the award’s first Juror, during a special award ceremony at the Jeune Cinéma dinner in Cannes on 16th July.
L’Oréal Paris who has been an official Partner of the Cannes Film Festival for more than 24 years, has always been a feminist brand that says about women’s empowerment, especially in the world of film through its prestigious relationship with prominent actresses who embody the values of the brand.
L’Oréal Paris is now going even further with this vison, with the inauguration of a dedicated award program for women in film industry. Thanks to their flexible format and relatively lesser barriers to entry, short films have long been considered to embark the future of the film industry and this award will motivate promising directors to pursue their creative ideas and provide funding that will empower women in overcoming the hurdles that they come across.
The Director of the Festival international du film de Cannes, Thierry Frémaux, said, “This exciting collaboration with L’Oréal Paris symbolizes a natural expansion of the brand’s continuous support for Cannes and the broad cinema community.
Frémaux adds that the Lights On Women Award will offer a much-deserved opportunity to honour a deserving creator and aligns with the broader dedication of the Short Films competition and global film schools’ short film programs to recognize the female talent of the future.
The winner of the first Lights On Women Award will receive financial support of up to 30,000 Euros. This versatile recognition will also offer the winner a stage for increased visibility and will also gain access to a sisterhood of cinematic talent.
