Chennai, 11th September, 2023- MGM Cancer Institute, a state-of-the art hospital at the forefront of cancer care, today organised a cadaveric-workshop on implant-based breast reconstruction. This procedure specific workshop, designed exclusively for the surgical fraternity, focused on advanced techniques in implant-based breast reconstruction, enriching the knowledge and skills of doctors dedicated to the well-being of breast cancer survivors.
Breast cancer has continued to be a significant public health concern, As per the 2020 National Cancer Registry Program Report more than two lakh women in India were estimated to have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and in terms of mortality, 37.2 per cent of women died from this disease in India in 2020, making it the second-highest breast cancer mortality rate worldwide for that year.
Breast cancer remains a significant health challenge for women globally. For many women, surgical interventions such as mastectomy are necessary, impacting both their physical and emotional well-being. Reconstructive breast surgery, including implant-based breast reconstruction, represents an essential approach to restoring not only physical form but also confidence and quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
The workshop conducted by MGM Cancer Institute’s Surgical Oncology team brought together a diverse group of medical practitioners, including plastic surgeons, oncologists, and other specialists. The primary goal was to provide participants with comprehensive insights into the latest developments in implant-based breast reconstruction, ensuring they can offer the highest standard of care to their patients.
Leading experts in the field delivered in-depth lectures on the principles and various aspects of implant-based breast reconstruction, including patient selection, surgical techniques, and postoperative care. Attendees had the unique opportunity to observe cadaveric demostration of surgical procedures performed by leading surgeons, gaining a firsthand understanding of advanced techniques and allowed participants to practice surgical skills, work with cutting-edge implant materials and engage in discussions with mentors. The live surgical workshop using a cadaver showcased successful outcomes of nipple sparing and skin sparing mastectomies with implant-based breast reconstruction, emphasizing the importance of personalized care.
Dr Sankaran Narayanan, Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at University Hospitals, North Staffordshire, performed the Cadaver demonstration of Nipple Sparing & Skin Sparing Mastectomy with Implant and Acellular Dermal Matrix Breast Reconstruction, while Dr Ashutosh Kothari, Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Guys and St Thomas NHS foundation Trust London, delivered lectures and conducted interatcive sessions on the biologics, techniques and peri-operative care of implant based breast surgery.
Prof. Dr. SVS Deo Professor and Head of Surgical Oncology, AIIMS New Delhi, Dr Rishikesh Parameshwar University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay, Lancaster, Dr C S Mani Surgical Oncologist Apollo Cancer Center, Chennai, Dr C B Koppiker Breast Specialist and Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Orchids Health Centre, Pune, Dr Praganya Chigurupati, Dr Sanjit Kumar Agarwal, Dr Ashutosh Tandore and Dr Shafeek Shamsudeen were part of the workshop.
Dr. Kirti Katherine Kabeer, Consultant Breast Oncoloplastic Surgeon and Organizing Chairperson of the workshop, MGM Cancer Institute, said, ” Over the past two years, we have observed a significant increase in breast-related cancers, particularly among women in their late 20s, 30s and 40s. This workshop featured sessions on the use of Implants in Reconstructive Breast Surgery in therapeutic and risk reducing procedures. Awareness of Implant-based surgery in India is comparatively low and we are committed to spreading knowledge about this technique, which can lead to a better quality of life beyond treatment.“
