Netflix, one of the world’s leading OTT platforms, recently updated its company culture guidelines in 5 years. The new section added to the guideline was titled “Artistic Expression.”

It sent out a memo addressed to its employees stating that everyone might not agree with everything on the service. Netflix said that they let the viewers decide what is appropriate for them instead of censoring specific artists or voices. Netflix clearly stated that it was ready to lose its employees who perceive the content as disagreeable and do not support the breadth of the content.

The world’s richest person Elon Musk made his view on the guidelines by tweeting: “Good move by @netflix.”

Netflix has previously been subjected to sharp criticism for streaming controversial content on cultural and political issues. Last year the OTT platform backed the comedian Dave Chappelle for his stand-up special “The Closer” which sparked criticism for remarks about transgender people that some found offensive.

Netflix has been working on its cultural issues within the company for the past 18 months, a spokesman informed The Wall Street Journal. He commented that the recent update to Netflix aims to help the employees make better-informed decisions about whether it is the right company for them.

Netflix had earlier informed their employees to provide feedback on the new culture guidelines. A company spokesperson confirmed that it received a lot of feedback and has taken most of them into account to shape its latest culture memo.

It’s notable that Netflix, in the first quarter, had a drop of 200,000 subscribers. As a result, the stock went down by 35%. Netflix then said that it is exploring offering a lower-priced ad-supported version of the platform to help boost its subscriber base. Netflix is taking steps to gain an advantage in the market.
