May 24, 2013: Roads all clear for auto major’s like Bajaj Auto who last year unveiled the qauadricycle codenamed RE60. These new types of four wheelers ‘Quadricycles’ have got the government nod paving the way for automobile companies to get into the production stage. The quadricycles which would be included as an additional category vehicle to be manufactured and registered in India would ply on roads as public transport within city limits.
In a statement made by Road Ministry, “A separate category has been proposed for notification to include quadricyle with specifications adopting present norms notified in the 3-wheeler category of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) or theEuropean Union quadricycle, whichever is more stringent.”
In a statement made by Rajiv Baja, MD, Bajaj Auto on the approval given by Government to Quadricycles he said “This is a wonderful day for Indian automotive innovation. The RE60 will soon be joined by many more similarly small, light and low speed vehicles that will make for a cleaner, safer, quieter world. As an anti-car company we are just delighted.” Quadricycles are considered to be safer than the three wheelers since it has a fully enclosed body structure with hard doors and top. These quadricycles have lower engine capacity than that of a small car but would be giving out phenomenon mileage.
Bajaj had earlier unveiled its Quadricycle named RE60 which is powered by a 200 CC petrol engine. RE60 can travel at a top speed of 70 km/hr and gives out a mileage of 35 kmpl. Once the commercialisation of Quadricycles starts all these vehicles should mandatorily carry an identification symbol ‘Q’.
