NMDC: Driving All-Round Development in Bastar and Dantewada

Bengaluru, 3rd December 2024: In the heart of Chhattisgarh, where the rich tapestry of tribal culture thrives, NMDC Ltd., India’s largest iron ore producer, is making significant strides in preserving this cultural heritage while empowering local communities. With a deep commitment to sustainable mining practices, NMDC recognizes the importance of building social capital in the areas it operates, particularly in the Bastar and Dantewada districts.

Over the past six years, the organization has steadily increased its contributions to community development projects. By blending cultural preservation with economic empowerment, the company is ensuring that the tribes of Bastar and Dantewada continue to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Fostering local cultures and traditions

The organization remains committed to support local culture and safeguarding the regional traditions. To ensure this, NMDC takes an active part by providing financial and infrastructural support for organizing cultural events like Bastar Dusshera, also known as Lokotsav. In contrast to the popular Dussehra, this event honours Danteshwari Devi, the Bastar tribes’ venerated local deity, rather than Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. The longest-running festivals in the world, it lasts for 75 days and draws visitors from all over the world. It is essential for enhancing the area’s economy, identity, and tourism. In FY 24-25 alone, the contribution has been around 50 Lakhs for this

NMDC, as part of its CSR initiatives, provides financial assistance for Madai Mela, a vibrant tribal festival celebrated in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. Rooted in tribal customs, the festival revolves around the worship of local deities and features grand processions, traditional music, dance and rituals. By supporting this cultural event, NMDC helps preserve tribal traditions, promote local art and foster community engagement, underscoring its commitment to empowering tribal communities and celebrating their rich heritage

Reviving Traditional Crafts

To empower tribal artisans and sustain the legacy of traditional crafts, NMDC runs comprehensive skill development programs in bell metal, bamboo craft, tailoring, and terracotta art and more.

NMDC’s training programs extend beyond crafts to include sectors like health, welding, masonry and electrical services, collectively benefiting more than 4,000 individuals. This multifaceted approach not only preserves age-old traditions but also creates economic opportunities, helping participants transition from unemployment to self-reliance. With an investment of ₹181.78 lakhs, these initiatives have trained over 460 unemployed tribal youth in the Bastar region.

By seamlessly integrating cultural preservation, skill-building, and economic empowerment, NMDC is not only shaping a sustainable future for Bastar and Dantewada but also preserving the essence of the region’s heritage for generations to come. The company’s initiatives align with its broader vision of inclusive growth, ensuring the communities around its operations thrive socially and economically.
