August 26, 2014: According to a report by Xinhua news agency which was published on Sunday, China is on its way to develop a new operating system which will take on rivals such as Google, Microsoft and Apple. The reports suggest that the new operating system which is likely to be up by October would be compatible first for desktop services. The new operating system would be extended to smartphone and other mobile devices later. The new operating system would be able to replace desktop operating systems within one to two years and mobile operating systems within three to five years

Ni Guangnan who heads an official OS development alliance established in March was quoted as saying to the trade paper, “We hope to launch a Chinese-made desktop operating system by October supporting app stores.” He further added, “Some Chinese OS already existed, but there was a large gap between China’s technology and that of developed countries.”

China in May had banned the government use of Windows 8 and in March last year the Chinese Government had accused Google that it had too much control over China’s smartphone industry and has discriminated against some local firms.

Simmering tensions between China and United States following revelations by Edward Snowden that US intelligence planted “backdoor” surveillance tools on US-made hardware has resulted in the Chinese government taking a strong against these operating systems. Global giant Microsoft is also under investigation for anti-trust violations. This move by the Chinese government is seen as an opportunity in creating an environment in the local market which is one of the biggest markets for computer and smartphone devices in the world.
