Padma Shree awardee singer Suresh Wadkar delivers soulful performance at 75th birthday celebrations of Dr Hansaji Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, Mumbai

The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, celebrated the birthday of its world-renowned Director, Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, at the institute premises today with a heart-warming classical vocal recital by Padma Shree awardee Shri Suresh Wadkar in the presence of several renowned yoga gurus and experts. This will be followed by a free Yoga camp for Women this evening at the institute, to commemorate and celebrate Dr Hansaji’s values and ideals. 

The celebrations honour Hansaji’s lifelong work to help the growth and development of Yoga, and to salute her selfless, lifelong service of society.

Shri Suresh Wadkar said, “I am honoured to have been a part of Dr. Hansaji Yogendra’s 75th birthday celebrations. I have been a life-long admirer of Dr. Hansaji’s work in the field of Yoga, and my performance today was a small tribute in honour of her work. I have always felt an immense emotional connection with The Yoga Institute Mumbai ever since I first visited the campus.”

Dr. Hansaji Yogendra said, “Yoga has always been relevant,  from antiquity to modernity,  as it addresses the physical and mental well-being needs of people throughout centuries.  

Yoga has taught us the importance of balance and moderation in life,” she said, adding: “Yoga is a friend, philosopher and guide that helps everyone reduce the effects of stress and worry and enables them to live well-rounded, cohesive and joyful lives.”

Dr. Hansaji observed: “Modern life often sees a disconnect between the emotion and the intellect,  which is the cause of much distress. A balance between the two is key to living a fulfilling life.” Dr. Hansaji Yogendra also pointed out that the Nispand App was a powerful tool to introduce balance and mindfulness in modern life. 

Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, is  a modern-day Yoga visionary and a globally acclaimed spiritual guru, wellness mentor and thought leader. She has been honoured with the Prime Minister’s Award for her contribution to Yoga. 

Her words, ideas and life-long body of work in Yoga, wellness and mindfulness has the source of powerful change in countless lives. Dr. Hansaji J. Yogendra has been honoured with the Bharat Gaurav Award at the UK House of Commons in British Parliament in London for extraordinary contribution to, and excellence in, the field of Yoga.

She has conducted more than 100,000 yoga sessions and has been honoured with the Prime Minister’s Award for her contribution to the field of Yoga. Dr. Hansaji has a prolific and commanding online presence on various social-media platforms which connects with millions of viewers worldwide. She is also a published author and writer. She is on the board of numerous national and international committees devising yoga syllabi and yoga policy. Dr. Hansaji Yogendra has designed health systems, special techniques, health camp programmes and well-being modules that cater to a wide range of people across age, ethnicity and gender. Her life is an example in commitment to social well-being. An epitome of grace and wisdom, she is a global symbol of peace, balanced living, and yogic living.

Padma Shri awardee and classical vocalist Suresh Wadkar offered a rich, musical tribute to Dr. Hansaji Yogendra as part of her birthday celebrations. The event was also marked by the organization of a free Yoga Camp for Women at The Yoga Institute between 6 and 8:30 pm. This is line with Dr. Hansaji’s Yogendra’s vision of making Yoga accessible for every member of society. The camp saw enthusiastic participation by women from all walks of life and was extremely well-received. 

The Yoga Institute was established in 1918 by the venerable yoga guru Shri Yogendraji, also known as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance. The Yoga Institute celebrated its centenary milestone on 25 December 2018. The 100 year anniversary celebration of the Institute was attended by Shri Ramnath Kovind – Former President of India,  M. Venkaiah Naidu – Ex- Vice President of India. Recognizing the philanthropic work done under Dr. Hansaji J. Yogendra’s guidance, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, felicitated The Yoga Institute with the Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga.

 The Yoga Institute is a non-profit organization and the oldest organized centre for Yoga in the world. The Institute has a diverse legacy of pioneering work in the field of yoga such as: the “householder yoga” movement, several social initiatives such as Annam Brahma (free meals for the underprivileged), free medical health camps, blood donation drive, wellness and mindfulness programmes, yoga for armed forces and police, holistic health programs, yoga programmes for the municipal and western railway staff, wellness programs and much more.
