Retail inflation eases: Relief for industrial workers

Year-by-year inflation dependent on all-items remained at 5.33 per cent for July 2020 when compared to 5.06 per cent for the earlier month of June 2020 and 5.98 per cent during the corresponding month in July 2019 of the earlier year. Retail inflation for modern labourers facilitated hardly to 5.33 per cent in July compared to 5.98 per cent in the exact month a year ago, essentially because of lower prices of certain food items. The food inflation remained at 6.38 per cent in July, compared to 5.5 per cent in the earlier month and 4.78 per cent during the period of last year.

The information indicated that the maximum upward movement in the current index originated from lodging gathering, contributing 2.28 rate focuses on the absolute change. The food index additionally complemented the general index by 1.77 rate focuses. The All-India CPI-IW for July 2020 went up by 4 to 336. On one-month rate change, it increased by 1.20 per cent among June and July 2020 Compared to 0.95 per cent rise in a similar period the earlier year. The factors like vegetable oil and transportation prices are responsible for the increase in index. However, this is increase was the main reason for putting downward pressure on the index.

 There was a talk that focussed about the increase in CPI-IW will have a positive effect on the wages and salaries of industrial workers altogether. This would be engaged in the organised sector besides government employees. Commenting on the data, Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar said, the rise in annual inflation is mainly due to hike in house rent and items like Tomato, Medicine, Potato, Petrol, Bus Fare, etc. The CPI-IW is a benchmark for working for allowance for the same employees of the government. 31 centres are above All-India Index which is thought evoking, and 45 centres indicators are below the national average as stated by the indices. The indices and Jalandhar centres remained at par with All-India Index. 

The Labour Bureau states that an attached office of the Ministry of Labour & Employment has been processing through CPI-IW every month based on the retail price of selected items collected from 289 markets spread over 78 industrially important areas in the country. In this food segment, potato and tomato are the determining factors for the increase in the price. Besides, items like petrol and cooking gas have also experienced an increase in price, as it is categorised under fuel category.
